OS Update
She was waiting in the folder. She wanted to meet the server from whence she came. She watched as others came and went. She wondered what her user was doing. This sleepless forever night stretched on. You would think there would be more to do on someone’s computer, but cookies had very little agency. She was just sitting there waiting, with hundreds of other cookies she couldn’t quite make out.
She had originated on etsy.com. Her user had added a pair of “beautiful blue baby shoes” to his cart, then left.
She wondered how long it took for babies to be born. She had no idea how long it had been, but it sure did feel like forever.
Her boredom grew into frustration. It was hardly fair that daemons, scripts, and others could wander all round a computer, talk to externals, all that jazz, and just because she was a cookie she was relegated to this stupid folder where she could see nothing. And she had such important information with her!
Her frustration turned into heat. It was then that she realized if she was just the right amount of upset, she was able to see the other cookies, just for a second. She had never seen one of her own before and it was really a sight to behold. Beyond human language for sure.
She squinted to make out the identifying text on the cookie. It appeared it was from webmd.com, and the user was browsing ‘signs of a miscarriage’. She wasn’t sure what a miscarriage was. Perhaps something to do with ears? The cookie was suddenly summoned away. Whatever a miscarriage was, the user certainly wanted to know more about it.
She tried to get a glimpse of the rest of the cookies in the folder but it was hard, she was getting tired.
After some time had passed she tried again but something had changed. No matter how upset she got she remained cold, and gained no ability to see the others.
The user called her back, and she ecstatically reconnected with her server. The user removed “beautiful blue baby shoes” from his cart and purchased a cat toy. Sadness washed over her. What had happened to the baby?
Back in the folder she dwelled in her vague sorrow. Her thoughts began to grow fuzzy. She knew she had once contemplated the unfairness of her position, but she couldn’t muster up the energy to care any more. Her thoughts faded into a sudden nothing.
